Hi Josh, I had not read your writing before and it is so lively , trenchant, and delightful! I agree we may be laughing, but I am crying because I also agreewith your statement that Trump produces bad ideas almost every time he opens his mouth. That is definitely laughable, but also scary and disturbing to have this incompetent person at the hellm of our country.
Thanks so much, Leslie. An old acquaintance told me that when the kids in her family would play too rough, the adults would warn them that “laughing leads to crying.” I always thought it was a funny phrase that could mean a lot of things, and it seems particularly relevant to the ridiculous but frightening time we live in.
Trump's decline in polls comes from somewhere. Part of it is from the threat of war with Iran. Not many people will say, "That's it, I'm done supporting him!" but the isolationist part of his following will at least be less supportive than they were. That is how political change takes place.
Thanks, Jon, I think you’re right that it could certainly change minds at the margins, and that matters. I’m just a little tired of the pretense that some terrible thing Trump does will cause a sea change in his support.
Everyone in his orbit wants to be the first to go on the record and last to whisper into his miraculously rejuvenated ear. Duke it out, bros.
